Announcements and Updates

    General Meeting of June 18,2008

Well the summer break is here.

The last meeting until September 3, was a quiet affair with 13 members in attendance. Some of the guys were seen stuffing the left over chicken in their pockets to take home. Remember we still have to pay for 25 plates.
    ---------------------------

Grant Smith's reports are doing a great job of keeping us informed on the happenings down at the bingo hall. It appears that the association has signed the new lease extending it to 2013. They are looking to sublet about half of the 20,000 sq. feet.
    ---------------------------

There seems to be a rumor floating around that the D.A.R.E. program is being discontinued. This is "not" true!

Constable Jane Owen, whom I've talked to as recently as last Friday is being assigned to a high school posting. Kathy DeHeer will remain in charge of administering to the D.A.R.E. operation and new instructors are in place. The program will continue.
    ---------------------------

Paul Cummings brought us up to date on the Children's Festival. It was very well attended in spite of the blustery weather. The kids were lined up 12-15 deep at our tent for most of the day.

Brad Lashmar took a moment to point out that Paul did an excellent job of organizing our clubs' participation in the festival.

I'd stopped by the Festival site to see what was happening about 5:00 p.m. Bobby G. and Glenn D. were at their stations. It wasn't long before Glenn got wind of free food and disappeared over the hill in a flurry of dust.

No doubt the favorite game(for the Optimists) at our tent is the one where you tie a kid to a steel pole and then taunt him or her with a marshmallow.
    ---------------------------

The suggestion of Piper Creek hosting a hospitality suite for the up coming convention was met with a luke warm response.
    ---------------------------

Doug Jacobson was circulating a couple of thank you letters we'd received from Exelta Gymnastics and Junior Achievement.
    ---------------------------

Bob Grainger continues to work on the Wakey Shakey Breakfast for August 23 and has arranged for it to be held at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
    ---------------------------

At the urging of President Glen, Brad and Jackey Lashmar hosted a "TGIF soiree" with pizza and drinks for all.
    ---------------------------

Presently the club membership stands at 49, with two prospects on deck. We're just waiting for their signed applications and cheques.
    ---------------------------

Work continues on the two upcoming events, Ladies Gala(Darrin Coles) and the Grey Cup Lottery(Cummings and DeBoon).
    ---------------------------

For all you dieters and health aware people, I came across this bit the other day, "Snickers bars are made from all natural ingredients". Do with that piece of info what you may.

Have a great summer, see you at the convention.

    Merle

p.s. The executive and board of directors will be meeting on July 11, 2008.

General Meeting of June 4, 2008

May 6, 2008 was the RCMP's "Volunteer Appreciation Awards" banquet. Ryan and Carol Morcom attended on our club's behalf and receivied a plaque recognizing our ongoing commitment to the D.A.R.E. program in Red Deer.

If you want to see the plaque stop by Ryan's place. He'll buy you a drink and show you the plaque.

    ------------------------------
Bob Grainger has everything lined up for the "Wakey Shakey Breakfast" on August 23, 2008.

    ------------------------------
Glenn Devereuax attended the “Futures Optimist Club” of Red Deer's Charter Banquet and presented a $500.00 (getting started) cheque from the Piper Creek Optimist Club.

    ------------------------------
Yesterday evening June 3, about 10 PCO's attended the Red Deer Optimist Club's Annual Wine Tasting evening. We were able to watch as Ken Williamson from the Red Deer Club garnered most of the ribbons along with Norm Cooper who took best of show.

Our own Brad Lashmar, fresh from victories at  the world's largest wine contest (over 4300 entries) in Vermont where he earned a gold and three silver medals was only able to claim a third place for one of his white wines.

Brad was a gracious third place finisher as he brought in a case of winning wines for everyone to sample.

    ------------------------------
On a sadder note I would like to extend mine and the rest of our members condolences to Lennis DeBoon, Henry's wife on the passing of her Mother. Lennis and Henry are attending the funeral in Grande Prairie.

    ------------------------------
The convention is coming are you registered? With it being in Red Deer we should be able to get almost 100% participation from the club. http://amsnwoptimist.org/2008 -District_Convention_Registration_Goo d_Copy.pdf

    ------------------------------
Darrin Coles is looking for volunteers to help with the organizing of the "Ladies Gala". Rhonda Hemstreet the cornerstone of this events' organization is looking for help. Contact Darrin for details.
